What people think of male nurses
I along with several of my nurse friends hate the term "male nurse". My normal response is I take care of females too, not just males. In today's society do we say "female doctor" or "female lawyer" or "male secretary"? I personally don't hear any of those, so why do we hear "male nurse?"That being said, I do think men that go into nursing do get treated differently. I feel that the men are often asked to do more lifting, take care of heavier patients (by heavier, I am strictly speaking of weight, not complexity). I have had men and women, patients and family either thrilled that a man was caring for them, or appalled.I'm now working as a nurse practitioner. One of my first NP jobs, the 11 NPs that I worked with loved going around and saying that they "finally let a guy in the practice." So, in my pinion, men are treated differently, sometimes better, sometimes worse. Sorry about the rampage at the beginning, just one of my pet peeves.
